Rear Differential Troubles PD4106-089

She's at W.W. Williams on Columbia, SC. First, we discovered a bad right-rear tire - then the wheel seal - then the bearings... All that was replaced and discovered a leaky rear end seal. After pulling it, here's what we found.
Shrapnel on the drain plug. I imagine this thing is grinding itself down and feeding the tainted oil to the bearings, right? So now the question is, rebuild? Replace? Put it back in and hope it lasts a while? I called Luke at US Coach and he's trying to find one. We can open it up to see how bad the damage is, but I wanted to ask you guys first. Thanks to Russ Long for his advice so far.

I'd pull it apart. It will need pinion and carrier bearings most likely, as that metal would have gone through everything. Good chance the ring and pinion will be ok. They are pretty beefy.Your coach should have 4:11 gear set, which is getting hard to find. Plenty of the 4:27 gears, as they were standard on 4905's. The 4:27's will lose you 4 to 5 mph top speed and help some in hill climbing and starting out.

Yes, Zephod, that's the one.
That's about 18 miles from where I've parked my bus.

Most of the time the pinion carrier bearings on the V drive turn loose, they can pull the pinion and bearing housing without removing the differential to check that for failure

I haven't been adamantly searching as of yet; waiting to hear from Luke at US Coach tomorrow. Once we know the full damage I'll be able to develop a plan.

Branson, as far as I know, the 4106 only came with 4 1/8 ratio and the 4905 came with 4 3/8. Fast Fred said that he had a 4 3/8. He seemed to think it cost him about 1/2 mpg
Good luck finding what you need
