how I did it was I paid a mechanic helper $ 40 per hour to help me remove and reinstall it in the coach
it only took 2 hours to remove once I had the bumper off and other stuff out of the way and 3 hrs to put it back in and get it running
I sent the engine on a skid by way of trucking co that had a tail gate lift to put in in the truck cost was $ 500 each way
sent it to LEIDS DIESEL 267 Green Hill Rd, Newville, PA 17241, USA
Phone: +1 717-776-7725
cost to do total rebuild was $ 10,000 no tax ( out of state ) mine was a 6v92ta
this is a family business and do a great job and this is what they do every day is they work on DD 2 stroke diesels
this was in 2010 and I live in Huntsville Ontario Canada
they do not have a web site as they are horse and buggy type people
so I would give them a call for a real quote and then you will have a base line to go on
it only took 3.5 weeks from the time we put the engine on the truck to the time we unloaded it off the truck
any questions just ask

I doubt you will get that price now Dave the parts from DD have gone up 30 to 50% since 2010.I just finished a a 8v92 in Texas there was only 1 new DD crank in the US available they wanted $4800.00 for the crank and $1400.00 for 1 cam.Forget about new heads there are none available only recons that have been welded, the machine shop charged me $1500.00 to line bore the block those old engines are not cheap to rebuild now lol when I started they were average $100.00 a cylinder that was parts and labor that was a long time ago

Leids is the place to go for me also. They do great work at reasonable labor rates. They do an incredible amount of stationary power plant engine rebuilds, most of which are DD two strokes. There is frequently a bus conversion there for engine repair rebuild. They rebuilt our 4104 and turbocharged it several years ago. In the vicinity of Carlisle, Pa.

Tim,
American Fleet in Springfield Missouri can also give you a quote. We only build Detroit engines, mainly for the bus industry. Once we receive customers cores, they are typically back in their hands within 10 days. We only use genuine parts and each engine is dyno tested prior to shipping. If you need any references, please let me know.

My coach has an American Fleet rebuild with 4k miles. I sleep fine at night knowing it's good for a long time. A 100K mile warranty means they stand behind their work.

Although I dont have direct experience with American, I highly recommend them from word of mouth experience. Do it right and be done with it.
