Confused on wiring
« on: November 18, 2019, 05:24:09 AM »
Good day. I was working on my 102dl3 removing the street side inner baggage compartment. I cut the wires that come from the roof just above the drivers seat to remove the speaker wires an interior lighting. The problem is now my battery light on the dash is staying on. Did i cut something i shouldnt have or is it just a coincidence.
Idled the bus for about 2 hours( fast idle) and the light did not go out.
Any ideas.
Thanks

probably-- I had older  MCI and lots more than partial rack accessory wires(speakers/inside lights) see what else is not working IE top roof clearance lights. My old memory seems to remember 120V wiring for service lights (cleaning crew) and outlet in partial rack for sweeper etc. Docking system..

"Overhead compartments" or "Parcel racks" is what you're looking for.

Do the schematics indicate any of the junction plugs being located in the racks? There's a TON of multiplex stuff in either end of the street side racks in the E and J models.

As the hobby moves into the electronic buses, it is imperative that every wire is known, before cutting stuff. As we get into them, cutting the multi-plex comms cable doesn't fix with a splice and some tape

There will be a new phenomenon and related TV show about 90's and newer buses being accidentally turned into yard art by cutting the wires, and not knowing a path back...

I am seeking investors for this entertainment endeavour...

Happy coaching!

I have not lost any other lights or accessories. But i may spend some time and splice the wires back together and see what happens

BW, I want to help support your new comedy series by suggesting ideas for episodes like, "Honey we accidentally burned the bus down", "We ain't got it, you don't need it", and "Rip 'er all out an start over"

That should be enough for a quarter season right there, but we can also add "Noah's Flood", and "Lightning strikes again,... and again,... and again..." plus as a bonus, "WHY DOESN'T IT WORK???!!!"

welcome to the awshoot club.. anyone here that hasn't experienced it is due to..   When I and others comment it is usually meant to be helpful /make you realize that someone has been there! You have at least 3 computers to deal with -anti lock brakes- engine ECM--Trans ecm. that all need to talk to each other. All my wires were severed--gone at rear bay bulkhead. Fire--Air lines also.  Lots of the guys here experienced my flustration at the process --Now I just say not again!!! I can do mini-series my self..

I guess when i started this project it would have been as easy as my other 2. When i did my 99 prevost la mirage i didnt have any issues with the wiring in the upper luggage racks. The one i live in now is a 89 mci which when i removed its interior had no issues with electrical. I guess the 99 102dl3 is a bit more advanced than the previous 2. Im not looking forward to reconnecting the wires i removed to see where i went wrong. I am still hoping that the battery light on the dash is only on because i have low batteries

Maybe you do have low batteries. Check the voltage with the engine off, and with it on. Maybe the charging circuit is not putting out. If it is okay, then maybe your sniping caused a change.  ::)

Wiring can be complicated, I am a new owner of a middle age (almost classic) bus and have definitely come to the conclusion that I need to map things first and document it, before I start changing it!!!!

There's what the wiring diagram for your bus says and there's what every previous owner did just to make it further down the road or the last summers outings.

On my bus there is a spare wiring sheet and two thirds of the supposed spare wire terminals have something already connected.

I write my self notes on close by surfaces .permanent marker!! Plus have master WD from Prevost that I maintain. I follow the color code by original MFG. Do not sub color because I ran out of it.. Memory is good for basic system but mine is fading so go visual reinforcement. I even tattoo replacement wires and completely removed old wire. I also don't trust myself to splice shielded wires--replace with new only.. Just my way.

Just finished removing the inside overhead compartments on our 1997 102D3.  Out of the bundle of wires on each side only one wire was required to be left intact.  This is a blue wire on each side that runs to about the middle of the coach and enters the ceiling sheet metal.  This wire is for the clearance lights on the outside of the coach.

I pulled the batteries out the other day and tested them. They were both low. I believe the one i had on the 12 volt circuit was really low. Once the weather gets a little warmer i am going to rei stall and see what happens. I quess running the bus at fast idle for a couple hours just isnt enough to keep the charge up. Will keep you posted and thanks for all the replies

On the 96 MCI 102 D3 that i'm parting out The harness you are talking about is well marked with aluminum tags. It is interesting to know you only needed the blue wire for the outside markers.
The rest can be repurposed for other uses.

The DL3 should be straight forward for wiring, lol just wait till you deal with the multiplex system on a J model
