50DN mounting leaking
« on: January 19, 2021, 10:43:01 AM »
Pressure washed the engine, 8V92, there is a slow oil leak from under where the 50DN attaches to the engine.

Difficult to see or even get a picture of the actual leak, planning on pulling everything off and replacing all the gaskets.

I have been watching the other 50DN topic on catastrophic failure.

What are the wear Items that should be replaced/examined at the same time?

I went round and round with the same thing on mine, and while it was in for other repairs I had the shop replace the gasket that goes between the alternator and the block. It took care of 95% of the leak, but not all of it. In the end, I had some oil getting through the thread and it was taken care of with the addition of a few crush washers.

My point? Might just be an oil leak. But, if there are lots and lots of miles on the alternator it wouldn't hurt to replace the bearing on it while you have it off to replace the gasket, IMO.

You should take it to a  50DN service facility and have it upgraded to new style drive bearing and oil line change on it. Or exchange for an upgraded one.

What's the details on this. Is this done custom, ask alternator rebuilder to upgrade some parts or can an upgraded 50DN be bought via SKU number? Any idea how much and how long to swap out? MC8 with gear drive unit
