Hydrogen fuel news
February 23, 2023 0 By JULIE CAMPBELL
The interest in hydrogen is rising due to its appeal for powering trucks and vans as well as government aid.
Interest in fuel cell vehicles is rapidly on the rise and trucks and government subsidies are receiving a great deal of credit for moving this trend along as quickly as it is going. In particular, the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has been seen as placing the spotlight on H2 as a practical alternative to battery electrics.
Though battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have become quite popular, hydrogen is also taking off.
Zero emission passenger cars are certainly seeing the most growth in the BEV category. That said, vans and trucks carry heavier loads and must often travel longer distances. Long-haul fleet operators often say that batteries for those types of applications are too heavy, require too much charging time, and could overload existing power grids...
cell vehicles and BEVs alike.
As is the case with BEVs and their recharging infrastructure, a top challenge to rolling out fleets of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is that a widespread refueling infrastructure is not yet in place. This has placed notable pressure to begin constructing hydrogen refueling stations even ahead of the mainstream use of H2 trucks and vans.
In the United States, the IRA offers subsidies for inexpensive H2 and refueling infrastructure that is receiving praise from industry executives that say this will help to accelerate the development of heavy-duty pickup trucks and semi-trucks.
“Thanks to the IRA, things will move faster in the U.S.,” said Symbio fuel cell maker CEO Philippe Rosier. Symbio is a French joint venture between Michelin and Faurecia.
Proponents of H2 believe that this type of support for the development of the trucks and the construction of refilling station networks will make a substantial difference in the adoption of the technology on a larger scale. Stellantis vans, which receives its fuel cells from Symbio, predicts that the sale of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles worldwide will reach 2 million units per year by 2030.

Nikola’s hydrogen fuel trucks to be first in US with PlusDrive automation
Nikola’s hydrogen fuel trucks to be first in US with PlusDrive automation
March 2, 2023 0 By ALICIA MOORE
They will be the first Class 9 fuel cell electric vehicles with the automated driving system in the United States.
Nikola Corporation – best known for its hydrogen fuel trucks and fueling network plans – has announced that it has selected PlusDrive as an option for Nikola Tre vehicles that will be rolling out next year.
PlusDrive is a safety, fuel efficiency and driver comfort enhancement system developed by Plus.
hydrogen news ebookPlus is an automated truck developer and its PlusDrive was selected to be available in both the battery electric and hydrogen fuel trucks Nikola will be selling in the U.S. starting next year.
“PlusDrive elevates the role of the professional driver to a pilot who supervises the system to drive on the highway,” read a recent press release describing the automated assistance system. “Its capabilities go far beyond basic driver assistance capabilities such as lane keeping and automatic emergency brakes. PlusDrive also handles everything from staying centered in the lane, lane changes, merges, stop-and-go traffic, and nudging, while the driver remains alert and attentive.”
Nikola has confirmed that the first factory installed PlusDrive in hydrogen fuel trucks will be next year.
“The enhanced driver assistance features are yet another differentiator of Nikola’s premium driver experience for our customers,” explained Nikola Corporation president and CEO Michael Lohscheller. “We are one of the first OEMs to offer 100% electric steering paired with the ZF EBS braking system. This base technology in all our vehicles, combined with Nikola’s own internally developed vehicle controls, over-the-air updates and vehicle security can enable the integration of these advanced sensors and the realization of the PlusDrive safety system from Plus.”
PlusDrive will also help to ensure that the battery electric and hydrogen fuel trucks are providing their best efficiency.
Ensuring the best efficiency and performance from hydrogen fuel and battery electric trucks.
The announcement from Nikola explained that “PlusDrive will moderate and predict the optimal and safest speed, while also taking full advantage of regenerative braking in traffic and slowing conditions. Also, the vehicle is expected to keep the best position within the lane and account for other large vehicles and
Not unlike other existing automated driving systems, the PlusDrive system to be installed in Nikola trucks use radar, a spectrum of cameras and LiDAR. The vehicle maker views this addition as an opportunity to considerably enhance the capacity of a driver to safely interact with other road users, providing added liability protection to the driver and vehicle owner alike.
Though PlusDrive isn’t newly developed for Nikola, the electric and hydrogen fuel trucks will include a new capability to the system that was first announced in the company’s release. It stated that “When not in use on the highway, the Nikola Tre BEV and hydrogen electric vehicles will maintain the ability to detect obstacles and traffic in the blind spots. Other traffic, including motorcycles and pedestrians, will continue to be highlighted to provide drivers with their proximity information.”
The PlusDrive system to be offered in the Nikola tricks are meant for use in all traffic conditions.
The announcement also added that “The system will work in all traffic conditions, including loading docks. Pedestrian safety around the trucks is especially important as much quieter zero-emissions vehicles become a mainstay. The system will highlight pedestrians around the vehicle to help ensure safety of typical operations including loading and unloading, inspections, and charging and fueling. Safe operation during high-power charging and hydrogen fueling will also be supplemented with detection and recording features.”
This is a considerable leap forward for the system that was developed for highway use, as street and yard operations by their very nature are associated with a considerably higher number of incidents.

First-of-its-kind Electriq Powder manufacturing plant to be built in Amsterdam
March 3, 2023 1 By ANGIE BERGENSON
The powder plant can provide a safe end-to-end hydrogen solution.
A recently announced partnership between hydrogen solution provider, Electriq, and global energy storage and handling company, Zenith Energy Terminals, will see the construction of the world’s first Electriq Powder manufacturing plant, at the Port of Amsterdam.
The unique powder plant can simplify hydrogen storage, transport and usage.
Powder is a solid hydrogen carrier. It simplifies storage, transport, and use of hydrogen in last mile, off-grid and backup applications. Electriq’s fuel and release technologies transform hydrogen into a coffee-like powder form. It acts like common detergent powder and has superior safety and energy density compared to liquified and compressed hydrogen. It is then converted back into electricity via a propriety, compact release unit.

Hydrogen engines to be mass produced by Hyundai by 2025
March 7, 2023 0 By ALICIA MOORE
Hyundai Doosan Infracore is accelerating engine development.
After the completion of its H2 internal combustion engines (ICE) design and rolling out the prototype, Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI) is revving up the development of its hydrogen engines, with the aim to mass produce these engines by 2025.
HDI’s H2 ICE is an 11-litre class engine.
hydrogen news ebookThe hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine can produce a power output of 300 kW (402 HP) and a torque of 1700 NM at 2000 RPM. Fulfilling Tier 5/Stage 5/Euro7 regulation, the engine satisfies the emission requirements to be 90% decreased to the current level to meet Zero CO2 (below 1g/kwh) and Zero Impact Emission.
Low-purity hydrogen is used to power the hydrogen engines. This makes the engines not only strong, energy-dense and economical, but the most suitable engine system for mid-to-large-size vehicles and vehicles traveling long distances. Just one charge of 10 minutes allows for a distance up to 500 km (310.6 miles), meanwhile the H2 internal combustion engines are 25-30% more economical than battery packs or fuel cells when vehicle price and maintenance costs are factored in.
The new hydrogen engines will be installed in commercial vehicles.
To both accelerate commercialization and lower costs, HDI plans to leverage its current engine technology and facilities. The new hydrogen engines that will be produced will be installed on commercial vehicles, including large buses, trucks and construction equipment. HDI will unveil its prototype hydrogen-powered ICE power unit this year (2023), with plans for full-scale testing slated for 2024, and full-scale mass production planned for the following year in 2025.

I was expecting the tankage issue to be REAL hurdle for hydrogen use but now I see they've sorted out a method to catalyze hydrogen into a powder, meaning basically no more leakage issues to amount to much. (Hydrogen gas being the universe's smallest atom or molecule will float right through any other material given time and pressure, and compressed hydrogen takes a LOT of pressure. Especially if you think you can liquify it.)
This new powdered storage method should make that mostly a problem of the past from what they are saying. Time will tell.

Legislation introduced to develop hydrogen fuel station infrastructure
Legislation introduced to develop hydrogen fuel station infrastructure
March 21, 2023 1 By TAMI HOOD
Bill supporting the expansion of the H2 fueling network have been reintroduced.
The Hydrogen for Trucks Act is one of four bills in a newly introduced legislation package and would support the demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the development of an H2 fueling station network.
The bipartisan Hydrogen Infrastructure Initiative bill was reintroduced by 2 Senators earlier this month.
The four-bill Hydrogen Infrastructure Initiative package is in support of the adoption of hydrogen fuel as a clean energy source for powering energy-intensive sectors.
It was reintroduced by Senators Chris Coons (D-Delaware) and John Cornyn (R-Texas). Cosponsors of the bill included Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), Ben Ray Luján (D-New Mexico), John Hickenlooper (D-Colorado), and Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico).
The proposed legislation is meant to offer targeted support for using H2 for high-value end-use applications. It will also support refueling infrastructure construction, including transportation, storage and delivery. It is meant to provide support in particular to energy-intensive sectors that are challenging to decarbonize, but where hydrogen fuel could be particularly appropriate as a clean energy alternative.
Hydrogen fuel has considerable potential in trucking, maritime, and heavy industry, among others.
The legislative package is meant to give priority to areas where the result will be the maximum emissions reductions. The point is to bring on the largest possible environmental benefits.
The strategy could reduce the initial cost barriers that stand in the way of those that would otherwise be willing to adopt it. According to the Senators, the package enables partnerships and packages that will help the US to take important steps forward toward meeting the requirements of a strong H2 .
The Hydrogen for Trucks Act is, as the name suggests, aimed specifically at the trucking industry. It would support the demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell heavy duty vehicles and of H2 refueling stations. At the same time, it would collect useful data to help direct future H2 trucking infrastructure investments.
Cost barriers for fleet operators would be reduced, clearing the path for early adopters to include fuel cell vehicles in their operations. Data and benchmarks would also become readily available, said the senators, providing an incentive for private investment and boosting demonstration and deployment.
