Shell delt the hydrogen cars a blow today closing all the hydrogen stations in California all 55 stations

After more than a decade and some $116 million of state support, California has 63 publicly accessible fueling stations for hydrogen cars. It also has about 12,000 hydrogen passenger cars on the road — by far the most of any state, with about 40 percent of global market share in 2022.Aug 15, 2023

63 stations for 12,000 cars is not a good ratio, I think Shell bailed because of politics and the EV push in California. Maybe some company will buy the Shell stations, one energy site says 7 closed one says 55 closed, with politics in DC now the push is for EV we may not have a choice in a few years

the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology, IIT) of Genoa, and BeDimensional S.p.A. (an IIT spin-off).

The technology, developed in the context of the Joint-lab’s activities and recently published in two high-impact factor journals (Nature Communications and the Journal of the American Chemical Society) is based on a new family of electrocatalysts that could reduce the costs of green hydrogen production on an industrial scale.
Hydrogen is considered as a sustainable energy vector, an alternative to fossil fuels...

Hydrogen fuel news

ebruary 15, 2024 0 By TAMI HOOD
The company recently raised $246 million to support its efforts to drill for naturally occurring H2.

Clean fuel startup Koloma, a company backed by Bill Gates, has completed its largest round of funding yet,
Koloma had already previously announced that it was the recipient of a research grant from a program from the US Department of Energy (DoE) for locating natural H2 deposits and extracting them for use as a clean fuel.  In fact, it was only the day after that announcement that the company then made a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in which it disclosed the new funding amount.

The grant is meant to be used for research into refining methods to stimulate production of white hydrogen underground, which can then be extracted.  Koloma has been working on the commercialization of a broad spectrum of research conducted by Tom Darrah, its co-founder and CTO, as well as a geologist from Ohio State University. Darrah has studied the location of white hydrogen reservoirs for years and has been focused on where they are most likely to be found.  He has also worked on methods the oil and gas industry has developed in order to improve the extraction process...

'There is enough natural hydrogen underground to meet all demand for hundreds of years', says US government agency
Geologists expect 'gold rush' for natural H2 resources, conference told

There are trillions of tonnes of naturally occurring hydrogen in underground reservoirs, a tiny percentage of which would meet all the world’s H2 needs for hundreds of years, geologists said last week — arguing that a “gold rush” to exploit reserves is about to start.
An unpublished report from the US Geological Survey (USGS) — an agency of the US government — has found that there are as much as five trillion tonnes of natural hydrogen underground, USGS researcher Geoffery Ellis told a US conference last week, according to the Financial Times...

Ahh a new color code for Hydrogen it's now called Gold Hydrogen!!!!

Here's an article about it: https://theconversation.com/gold-hydrogen-natural-deposits-are-turning-up-all-over-the-world-but-how-useful-is-it-in-our-move-away-from-fossil-fuels-220230

To date its only really been discovered in a few places. The problem that they state with a bit of hand wringing is:

It’s also very hard to tell whether a possible subsurface “trap” contains oil, natural gas, hydrogen or just salt water. The ultimate test is to drill and see what’s there. But if a possible hydrogen field turns out to contain crude oil, how do we ensure it’s left in the ground?

But hey if they do find a good deposit I think it should be used to make steel:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959652618326301

Most of the currently hydrogen produced steel is for specialty steels because of the high cost of producing hydrogen.

So find a good Gold Hydrogen well, build a steel plant!!! Rather then having to distribute it too thousands of customers or transport it vast distances. Easier to find iron ore and put in train line than a hydrogen pipeline.

Nikola Celebrates Grand Opening of First HYLA Refueling Station in Southern California
Ontario-based station marks a significant step forward in establishing comprehensive hydrogen refueling network for Class 8 trucks

Published March 21, 2024
PHOENIX – March 21, 2024 – Nikola Corporation (Nasdaq: NKLA), a global leader in zero-emissions transportation and energy supply and infrastructure solutions, via the HYLA brand, celebrated the grand opening of its inaugural HYLA high-pressure modular refueling station and facility in Southern Calif. The celebration welcomed fleet customers, dealers from Nikola’s sales and service network, government officials, industry press and members of the Nikola leadership and engineering teams, each playing an integral role in the realization of this achievement.

Highlights of the event included remarks from Nikola executives, as well as Joe Biagi, Biagi Bros. Fleet Director, and representatives from both the City of Ontario and the office of Congresswoman Norma Torres, who presented Certificates of Recognition. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to take part in truck and hydrogen refueling demonstrations, facility and equipment tours and technology Q&A sessions with Nikola engineers focusing on hydrogen safety and the HYLA ecosystem. Attendees also had the opportunity to take rides in the Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks, further showcasing Nikola’s advanced technology that is available and driving on the roads today.

The Ontario station, which opened for operation last month, will be capable of fueling up to 40 Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 trucks daily. This station is integral to Nikola’s strategic initiative to develop up to nine refueling solutions set to be completed by mid-2024, with 14 total refueling solutions to be operational by the end of the year...

Ultra-fast green hydrogen production from municipal wastewater by an integrated forward osmosis-alkaline water electrolysis system
Gabriela Scheibel Cassol, Chii Shang, …Li Ling Show authors
Nature Communications volume 15, Article number: 2617 (2024)
Recent advancements in membrane-assisted seawater electrolysis powered by renewable energy offer a sustainable path to green hydrogen production. However, its large-scale implementation faces challenges due to slow power-to-hydrogen (P2H) conversion rates. Here we report a modular forward osmosis-water splitting (FOWS) system that integrates a thin-film composite FO membrane for water extraction with alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), denoted as FOWSAWE. This system generates high-purity hydrogen directly from wastewater at a rate of 448 Nm3 day−1 m−2 of membrane area, over 14 times faster than the state-of-the-art practice, with specific energy consumption as low as 3.96 kWh Nm−3. The rapid hydrogen production rate results from the utilisation of 1 M potassium hydroxide as a draw solution to extract water from wastewater, and as the electrolyte of AWE to split water and produce hydrogen. The current system enables this through the use of a potassium hydroxide-tolerant and hydrophilic FO membrane. The established water-hydrogen balance model can be applied to design modular FO and AWE units to meet demands at various scales, from households to cities, and from different water sources. The FOWSAWE system is a sustainable and an economical approach for producing hydrogen at a record-high rate directly from wastewater, marking a significant leap in P2H practice.

Hydrogen truck first trailer pull gives HVS something to celebrate
March 25, 2024 0 By ANGIE BERGENSON
The company has announced its latest major milestone in vehicle testing.
UK-based Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS), a designer of OEM hydrogen propulsions systems for trucks, is celebrating a major milestone after its hydrogen truck successfully completed its very first trailer pull on the test track.
The X2.0 is powered by green hydrogen.
The hydrogen fuel cell truck that completed the test – part of HVS’ vehicle testing and development program – was the company’s second test vehicle, X2.0.  Running on green H2, the hydrogen truck was pushed to perform on the high-speed track at UTAC, Millbrook. It was a significant moment for HVS, as its truck showed off its real-world capabilities...
