Through its HYLA brand, Nikola Corporation recently celebrated the opening of its first hydrogen station, a high-pressure modular refueling facility in Ontario, a city in Southern California.

EV maker Nikola Corp (NASDAQ:NKLA) said on Wednesday that a unit of the company collaborated with players, including trucker rest stop Blackjacks Roadhouse, to unveil the first commercial hydrogen fueling station in Alberta, Canada.

What Happened: The HYLA fueling station is part of Nikola’s aim to develop fueling infrastructure while simultaneously scaling hydrogen-powered vehicles. It will be situated along a busy highway in Leduc County, with about 96,000 vehicles passing by the truck stop daily...

The California-based company Achates Power was tasked with modifying this World War II engine to run on hydrogen fuel. They did so precisely to demonstrate that we not only need to create new prototypes but also to research and improve the ones we already have.

Achates Power, founded in 2004, specializes in the development of internal combustion engines with two opposed pistons. Their goal is to improve engine efficiency to reduce polluting emissions, which is what interests us in this context.

The engineers at Achates Power took the old Junkers engine and modified it to run on hydrogen instead of traditional fossil fuels. They made changes to the injection system, lubrication, and other parts to adapt it to hydrogen.

Tests showed that the engine can operate stably and reliably on hydrogen. It reached a maximum power output of 135 horsepower, similar to that of the original engine. However, emissions of polluting gases were practically nonexistent, meeting the strictest standards...

People aren’t the only ones whose performance can benefit from being caffeinated
New research has shown that by adding caffeine to hydrogen fuel cells, efficiency can improve, reducing the need for platinum in their electrodes.

When less platinum is required to produce efficient hydrogen fuel cells, the cost associated with making them is significantly reduced, said Japanese researchers.  In fact, the requirement for rare metals is among the to challenges faced in the effort to keep the cost of using H2 within an affordable range.

Researchers from the Chiba University Graduate School of Engineering in Japan say that they have found that one key to reducing the amount of platinum needed in electrodes is to add caffeine. The units become more efficient and therefore less expensive.

Hydrogen is going to be an extremely tiny market for decades to come. It might become generally available in regions where the discovery of gold hydrogen trapped underground or after the world has a surplus of renewable energy where the the surplus can be diverted to producing hydrogen.

There used to be SciFy trope about beaming power from solar in space. But ground based solar/wind has killed that as any viable solution.

Well, the importance of the direction the major engine manufacturers are going, to replace 18 wheelers diesel with hydrogen power, even retro fitting older engine compartments of 18 wheelers or even refitting diesel engines to hydrogen power as has been done with CNG fuel,  is a way some of us, bus conversion busnuts, may be able to make our busses live a longer life. As opposed to donating our beauties to a new division of the bus museums, the bus conversion section of the bus museums.

I saw a  Cummins Hydrogen powered trash truck being delivered to Vegas the other day,I am guessing they have Hydrogen stations to refill with in Vegas.I see the BNSF trains some with Cat engines running 25% Hydrogen looks like Chevron is involved by the signage on the engines ,it maybe the fuel of the future who knows, I don't believe electric is answer :o my power bill has doubled in the last 2 years
