Tis the season to get ripped off
« on: December 27, 2023, 06:16:19 AM »
Merry Christmas all! Hope all are well.
I copied this from the Prevost Owners Group FB page. Not a good year ending for this fella. SMDH!

"I almost always do my own maintenance. I was having a fuel delivery problem  and decided to take my bus to a WORLD WIDE reputable company for service. I’ve bought parts from the company many times but never let them do the service. When I took it to the shop I told them I was pretty sure it was injectors. They plugged their computer in and confirmed it was injectors. I received a $34,000 invoice. They said they changed all the electrical harnesses, ecm, fuel pump, all 8 injectors. They also charged core charges on all the hard parts. They said none of the parts were serviceable. When I went to pick up bus I went over work performed with service manager. The ecm had not been replaced, the fuel pump had not been replaced and the old injectors were no where to be found. They have taken $7000 off invoice so far. There was $15,000 in labor charges. I am working to have some of that taken off also.
Luckily I took the time to point this out before driving off with bus."

Happy New Year!

Oof!  I will say, one thing I always make sure of on the rare cases I have a shop do work on my bus is to discuss a cost threshold going in; basically I let them know in no uncertain terms that I'm expecting the end price to be no more than $X, and if it looks like we're getting close to that to give me a call so we can discuss why and what the new threshold will be.  Might not help overmuch in the case of a shop outright trying to scam you, but it's at least a good arrow to have in your quiver.

Heafy bill there even if the work was done .a set of injectors for a 8v92 DDEC only cost me $2600.00 with no cores ,Shops can have a problem when a mechanic forgets to log off a project and parts get coded to the wrong job.I had to intervene on a $51,000.00 inframe on a 8v92 in Phoenix.
The mobile mechanic stayed logged in for 78 hours @190.00 per hour after more adjustments, We ended up at a few dollars over$16,000.00 which was inline for new liner kits and a 1 rebuilt head and turbo, just took about 1 hour of my time on the phone. When payables hits the key they have no idea what work was done

Wouldn't $34,000 be expensive even for an Complete Overhaul?? One Reason I ran from my 2 Stroke. I Couldn't find a Soul that really knew what He was doing on work. Stewart Stevenson Detroit, San Antonio Tx. (135 Miles South of us) lost both their Old mechanics with Retirement when I wanted a checkup done on mine a couple years ago. Houston was closest in their Network. When I had Blower Seals repaired in San Antone, the Old Stewart Stevenson Mechanic refused to put one of their rebuilt Blowers on and tore it down and set it up Himself. Said He didn't trust the rebuild on shelf.

No they run close to $40,000.00 after removed from the bus if using OEM Detroit parts ,you can save using aftermarket parts which I am not a real fan of some of those parts

Yeah Cliff and the parts on the later Model 4 Strokes might be easier to acquire and most Diesel mechanics have at least a little more knowledge on them. I would hope this 8.3 350 HP Cummins in my Beater will last until I get too old to maintain it. Sure miss my old 1991 Prevost XL. It rode and handled like a dream. If I can find another Prevost 4 Stroke without DEF Crap, I'm gonna jump on it.

Ah you have such a nice bus, you must be loaded!!!

You should have taken them to task for not giving you a real estimate and getting approval.
