Long Trip In 4104

We're now up to 3700 miles on our 5700 mile trip. AR to Tucson, Phoenix, San Diego and Bakersfield.

We're now in Edmonds, WA after a stop in Albany, OR.  Will depart Sat. for ID, MT, WY, ND, NE, KS, MO and finally AR.

No problems so far except a lot of "Corrosion Prevention Fluid" on the right rear engine cover and bumper. I think it is mostly coming from the rear main seal but not sure. Tororrow I will get a few cases of 40W Delo 100 (Finally) and that should improve things. I couldn't find it anywere but seems there are a lot of Marine DDs around here so it is readily available.

We've stayed in a couple of nice RV parks but by far the nicest so far is
The Blue Ox in Albany, OR just off I5.

Also found that WA has nice dump stations. The one at the rest stop at about Mile Marker 140 near Seattle has four dump positions, a great place to stop.

Also, a really nice rest stop is the one 9 miles south of Roseberg, OR--really beautiful.

This is our second trip and has been really great. This is the only way to travel.

Great, thanks for letting us know.  Glad you're having fun in the old beast.  I'm looking forward to my first trip in mine on the weekend of May 19-21.  Hope I can have it ready by then.

I'm driving my new/old 4104 conversion around town a little these days, and I'm surprized how many waves and thumbs-up I'm getting .  People really seem to like the dinosaur.  Do you see a lot of that?

What kind of fuel mileage are you getting?

GREAT      I don't know if you are in the drawing - if you draw a few of the important things on the way you will remember them more and may mean more to you down the road - not to mention a good laugh 10 years from now.

the longest trip we have made in our 4104was about 1800 mi. we used less than a gal of oil. we also got a lot of waves and hello's for our bus. the old 4104's attract a lot of attention. i hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip

We get a lot of smiles and waves and questions.

I had the bus in a truck/tractor/bus show last summer and had signs posted giving the model, year and Trailways. For this trip I just left the signs up and this caused a lot more smiles when people read them.

Haven't checked fuel mileage this trip, 7-9 mpg last Sept. and probably the same now.

Haven't checked oil consumption, most of it is leaking.

Didn't get the 40W Delo 100 today, not in stock. It was a great price too, $2.09/qt. Western Marine could get it by Mon but we're leaving Sat.

For the little bit I had to add, I've used Shell-Rotella straight 40W from Wal-Mart for about $7.50 a gallon.  The last owner of the bus left a couple of gallons of Havoline 40wt in the generator bay, but I didn't find them until I'd gotten her home.

What the consensus on these?  Good oils?

None of the Shell-Rotella straight 40W from Wal-Mart I've seen is for two-stroke engines.

I buy the WM store brand 30W "Heavy Duty" oil rated for CF-2 because they don't carry it in 40W. Next time I'm near a WM I'm going to take another look at Rotella, maybe I missed the CF-2 on the label. Rotella is supposed to be the best diesel lube oil on the market but also the most expensive.

i went to the DD dealer and bought the 40wt they sell, it seems to work very well, oil consumtion is at a minum and i havew just a few leaks.if the 671 didn't leak a little i would start to worry about it. i would rather pay a little more and get the best oil i can find

NOT all Cf-2 oil meets DD 2 stroke specs.

The ash content is the issue.....and only some CF-2 oil meets this spec.
