Halon fire extinguisher head extension
« on: May 11, 2006, 07:21:37 PM »
I have a marine type halon extinguisher, that I would like to extend the sprinkler head on. Is there anyway to remove the sprinkler head without loseing the halon?

Are you sure you need to extend the nozzle?

Are you wanting the tank and nozzle in a seperate compartment?

I have some Halon and also the newer FM200 units in all my facilities.

The older units only have one nozzle and are in a corner of a 1500 sqft building, while the newer units are smaller tanks and spaced evenly throughout.

Is this a hand held or stationary tank?

You should be able to extend the nozzle if its past the point of the release mechinism.

FWIW

One other question-Is this a Manual or tirggered discharge?

As noted above, we need to find out more about your application.

We need to know how you plan to trigger the system and how you will mount the system.  If you let us know the manufacturer and model number, that would be best.

One of my vendors can probably furnish the parts you need once you let us know the details.

After all the years on this board I should know enough to give sufficient information when asking a question. Someday I will learn but not today.
There does not appear to be a brand name on the unit. It was manufactured by convenience marine products in 1982.  It is a model 35CG  Halon 1301. It is approximately 4in in diameter and 14in tall. The head (top) has 2 wires, orange and black. The outlet for the halon looks just like a sprinkler head for water. It has a link? that would melt and release the gas. Also what appears to be a fill valve.
What I want to do is place the bottle part outside my generator compartment with the sprinkler part in the compartment. It will not fit in compartment. The sprinler seems to be a standard pipe thread, what I would like to do is take off the sprinkler thingy and add a 3 or 4inch extension, can I do this without loseing the gas?

Jim,

My best guess, without some other identification is that this unit is supposed to be mounted in the engine compartment.

The orange and black are for a an override or manual discharge. What voltage sets it off is unknown.

From your description it doesnt seem that there is any pressure against the nozzle, but without some photo's or a closer look I can't make a safe recommendation.

With a manufacture date of 1982 I can almost guarantee that no one will service it and that it is non refillable.

Also remember that halon really needs to be in a closed(not vented) space to work to its optimum.

I would get with Jim Sheperd and get a cold fire set up.  I plan on doing one in my engine and generator compartment.

Good luck
