2007 Non-Rally at The Cove, October 12 thru 14th

2007 Non-Rally

I thought I'd start a new thread to bring everything up to date.
old thread =
http://www.busconversions.com/bbs/index.php?topic=5282.0

Since the airstreamers who reserved the facilities first have offered to share them with us & eating together will allow more time for B.S. (bus stuff ;D) . . . . I’ve come up with a tenative non-schedule for the non-rally.

Friday:
6pm   Chicken & Dumplin’s  Spaghetti - We can keep this warm so the late arrivals will be able to have a hot meal as soon as they arrive. 8)

7pm   Auction to benefit The Cove –
The Local Airstream unit does this & we are invited to participate. If you’d like, you can donate something for them to auction off. In the past the items have been yard sale variety, some junk, but mostly good stuff  :)

Saturday:
8:00am      Airstreamers breakfast
8:30am      BusNuts breakfast – Pancakes & sausage

Lunch      Hamburgers –
         Patties – (Jon Morris)
         Buns – (Kyle Brandt)
         Condiments –
         Tomatoes –
         Lettuce –
         Chips -

6pm       BusNuts host dinner with Airstreamers
"Speedies Chicken" grilled chicken on skewers from Upstate NY, Regular and BBQ.– (Jack Hart)
         Potato salad –
         Cheese biscuits –
         Baked beans –
Baked Potatoes – (Kyle Brandt) bring your favorite topping to share with others.

SMORES

Sunday:
8:00am    Airstreamers breakfast
8:30am      BusNuts breakfast – Pancakes & sausage
9:00am   Church service

Lunch      Leftovers

I’ll need a new headcount for those wanting to attend these meals so I can know how much to get. If you post here, it will be easier for me to keep up  ;D.

If you’d like to, please post here if you are planning to bring a side or desert.

There is no rally fee, so if you like you can make a donation to help offset the food costs.

For the meals, bring your own plates, utensils, cups & drinks – that will ease the burden in the kitchen  ;D

We are bringing board games & some crafts for the kids so they aren't too boored in the evenings.
P.S. bring your empty gallon milk jugs for a kid's craft.

Kyle,
Assign me what you would want us to bring, there will be two/three of us if Ash can come.  Looks like the temps will be a lot better this time.  Don't try to do all the expenses on your own now, we will bring what you ask and also a donation for things you did purchase for breakfast etc.

Kyle (and all others), looks like ya'll are gonna have a ANOTHER great rally!  Sure we wish we could join ya'll. Maybe the next one.  Jack

PS: Kyle, see what happens when you host a great rally, people expect you to continue by doing more rallies and they will get bigger!

Jack, that's why it's a Non-Rally -- I can't be blamed for how it turns out  ;D  ;D  ;D
Besides, I have GREAT friends that are willing to share their experiences of hosting big rallys - believe it or not, I was listening to all you & Paula had to say  ;D

Some days, there is no shortage of people telling me where to go :o

From the list of who is attending, It will be a GREAT time regardless of anything I do!

Gary, thanks watching out for me & for all your help - you know I need it  ;D
My goal is to have a gathering where all in attendance can contribute as they can & no one is discouraged from attending due to fees or etc.

With the "schedule" we can sign-up when we get there to allow everyone who wants a chance in the kitchen  ;D

I'll bring the churns - The kids enjoyed hand cranking it in July.
Anyone have a good mix for the ice cream? I have a 4qt & access to a 6qt churn.

Kyle, this is a great recipe for cooked custard ice cream. The real old fashioned kind.

HOMEMADE ICE CREAM
Bowyer Family Recipe
Cooked Custard Vanilla Ice Cream
(Makes 6 quarts)

INGREDIENTS:
•   4- tablespoons flour
•   5- cups sugar
•   ½- teaspoon salt
•   8- eggs (large)
•   8 cups (2- quarts) whole milk
•   5- 12 oz cans evaporated milk
•   1- pint Heavy whipping cream
•   8- teaspoons vanilla
•   25-30 lbs ice
•   4-6 cups rock salt
•   4 quart double boiler
COOKING DIRECTIONS:
•   Mix flour, sugar and salt. (Make sure flour is well mixed into sugar to prevent lumps in ice cream).
•   Stir in eggs, slightly beaten.
•   Stir in 6 cups whole milk, gradually. (reserve 2 cups for final fill of freezer)
•   Cook mixture in double boiler, (start with hot water), stirring constantly at first, until custard thickens slightly. (180-185 degrees). Custard will have curdled appearance, which will disappear in freezing.
•   Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Mixture may be placed in refrigerator to cool down overnight for faster freezing. (All ingredients may be placed in refrigerator overnight to cool).
FREEZING DIRECTIONS:
•   When cool, pour mixture into freezer can. (Contents should just cover top of beater bar)
•   Add evaporated milk.
•   Add Whipping Cream
•   Add vanilla.
•   Add strawberries or chocolate( if making flavored ice cream).
•   Freeze, adding layers of ice and then layer of rock salt until freezer can is full. Plug in freezer. When freezer stops (30-35 minutes), unplug motor, remove top and remove paddle.

•    Replace top, fill freezer with a mixture of ice and rock salt, cover with heavy towel, and let age for a couple of hours. Be sure and cover hole in top of cover to prevent salt from entering ice cream.

•   NOTES:
•   For Strawberry flavor, delete two cups of milk and add 24 ounce box of frozen sweetened strawberries, which have been thawed.
•
•   For Chocolate, delete one cup of milk and add 1 cup of Hershey chocolate
•
Retyped from original recipe and notes collected over 20 years including quadrupling original recipe and experiments with different mixtures. It is believed that the original recipe was included in a book included with the ice cream freezer. Richard Bowyer, Spencer, WV, 14 June 2001. rev. 060302

NOTE: I have used it as soon as the custard is cooked and is still hot. Just takes a little longer to freeze.

OK, I put my crack team of weather investigators on this and found that the average high is 73 on that weekend and as low as 49 in the Palmetto cove area.   I must admit there were a few anamolies that showed it as low as 31.  But in that remote circumstance we would just save on ice needed.

Not being one to leave anything to chance , we will bring our Florida winter clothes, if we can find were we put those sweat shirts.   ;D

Kyle,
My wife is on a trip with her sisters that weekend so I will be by myself in the Eagle. I can bring anything you need or I can provide $$ to help with your expense. Either is fine with me. Still checking with the other coaches to see if they will be able to make it. Love to be in a coach caravan!!!
Hey Ned, you can bet I will be close by!  :)

If all goes well, my wife and I (headcount of 2) are still planning to be there.  We can contribute to the costs and the wife will probably make a dessert thing of some kind.
