Prevost offers Volvo D13 engine as option in 2008
« on: February 13, 2008, 03:17:28 PM »
I just got a flyer in the mail from Prevost and it seems they are offering the Volvo D13 engine in their buses starting this year.  So in 10 or 20 years, the rest of us might have a shot at one.

Designed to cruise at 1400 rpm
Torque is 1650 ft lbs
Wider torque range (than what, I don't know, maybe the series 60.)
axle ratios of 4.1 or 3.91
oil change intervals of up to 35,000 miles

Sounds like all of the newer engines.  Volvo is also providing the engines for Mack trucks-no more Mack engines-they couldn't come up to smog laws.  Good Luck, TomC

Yeah, their emphasis is on "green" and how little they pollute.  Of course Volvo owns Prevost now, so this is no surprise.

We're going to see less choice in power trains moving forward. No different than buying a car, whatever motor is in it, that's it.

As everyone owns everyone else, and the costs of engineering the newer engines into the chassis rise with the complexity of emission controls and cooling these EGR monsters...

Volvo/Mack/Prevost are all related. The new Mack and Volvo engines are closely related.

Freightliner/Detroit/Daimler/Mercedes/Orion are related, there's another family. Huge overlap in engineering between the new Detroit and Mercedes.

How much longer Detroit Diesels will be available to Freightliner's competitors remains to be seen.

International will have their own big bore engine.

Paccar/Kenworth/Peterbuilt/MAN are all inter-related, Paccar is talking about their own engine for post 2010 emissions.

Cummins and Caterpillar are dead keen on penetrating the bus industry. Cummins is enjoying some serious success in the Transit end, and there are a lot of MCI going out the door with Cats onboard.

The times, they are a 'changin....

Detroit has their new engine out now and are installing them in the trucks. It is a DD 15, a combination MB and DD there will no longer (2010) be any series 60, MB 900 or MB 4000. All their engines will be built on the DD 15 platform. It looks alot like a MB engine, but of course they have to call it a DD or else no one would buy it in North America. Like most engines by 2010 it is a common rail fuel system.

Yup, what Niles said.

For those who haven't left the North American continent, Mercedes is a massive truck and bus builder to the rest of the world.

Knowing from past experience how prejudiced towards foreign products many here are, they just bought up Detroit Diesel, back some years now, to round out the market share they enjoy around the rest of the globe.

Lots of truckers who have an MBE motor now, though unwilling at the beginning, will be quietly choosing one again....

The good old days are long gone (if they really were the way they appeared) international engineering is where we are today.

"Knowing from past experience how prejudiced towards foreign products many here are"

Not to get political however some studies have suggested that the overseas "hate America crowd" act out their impulses by refusing to buy American products. Guess it could cut both ways.

I think the 'Hate America' thing is pretty much reserved for your government and your military - it generally doesn't extend to the American people or American products. Truth is though, apart from Jeeps, PT Cruisers and some small-engineered Camaros there aren't any American vehicle brands for sale in the UK - I cannot speak for the rest of Europe, but we all have the same laws so I guess the same is also true. There is certainly no 'heavy' equipment sold here, apart from perhaps Caterpillers (which have British engines). The point is that even if you convert a Yank car / truck / bus to right-hand-drive, upgrade the brakes, tyres, lighting and other safety stuff, you would still fail European type approval laws on difficult-to-fix engine-related stuff like noise and emissions - BUT hopefully if more and more domestic US manufacturers start fitting Euro-designed engines (Mercs, Volvos, Perkins etc) at source then that problem will go away and we will begin to get some more interesting vehicles on our roads here.

And I worked for Perkins at the time! Before that they were owned by Variety of Canada, so calling Perkins 'British' has been wrong for decades, just as it is technically wrong to call Greyhound (for instance) American. But most people continue to think of Perkins (and Jaguars, Land Rovers, Rolls Royces, MG, Bentleys, Aston Martins etc) as being British because they're built in Britiain - but every single one of those brands are owned overseas now. But is a British-built Nissan or Honda still Japanese, or a South-African or American-built Mercedes still German? Does it really matter anymore? Do 90% of drivers even know what kind of engine their car has? Discuss.

I would try Rimmer Brothers (www.rimmerbros.co.uk) - I have used them in the past for Range Rover parts and never had a problem with anything I bought. You might also want to contact some of the smaller Triumph specialists (see adverts in the classic car magazines) on the basis that the smaller suppliers are more likely to have genuine new-old-stock parts - the big operators like Rimmers will have to stock more reproduction pattern parts because the are selling high volumes and competing on price against the other big operators.

If you need to get hold of British classic car magazines try www.magazineexchange.co.uk  (and, yes, I do have an association with this seller!)

Hope that helps
