Wondering which infrared temp gun I should get.

what kind of "distant to spot ratio" (!?!) is necccessary?  Also is there a big dif in the entry level ones and the more expensive ones? Are the high end ones neccessary for basic trouble shooting bearings, brakes etc...?  Gracias as always, Patrick.

I got mine several years ago at NAPA, I think about $60. Mine ios a 6:1 ratio (1" spot when 6"from gun, 2"@12". etc.).  If I was doing it agaijn, I would get a 12:1. Jack

I bought the mini Raytek gun online for $40, yes it is new,not refurb.
Works just fine for what I need it to do. Helps me diagnose and troubleshoot braking system, cooling system, trans temp and wheel issues.
Very satisfied with it.

zubzub, you can buy a Mastercool made by Raytek 12 to 1 for 50 bucks from www.ackits.com  comes with case and a hand held thermometer

If you can make this link work they have a article on what it can used for even checking for alignment problems

The "distant to spot ratio" is pretty important. I have two different brands and the distances are quite a bit different.

Nick.....GREAT looking blaster.  Is it a Draconian Death Ray which works by deathing or is it a Buck Rodgers Photon Discinagrator which works by.....?  Or is it a Klingon disruptor which works by disrupting...?

I bought my lazer thing temp reader at the local auto parts on sale for half price of $50.00 bucks.  Works great with a new 9 volt batt every 3 months or sooss, or longer if you disconnect the battery.

Works best within 6 to 12 inches (hugh?) but also works well at long distance of up to around 6 feet or sooss verified by other lazer thingies.  I like my coffee right at 120 degrees F.  :) :) :)

HB of CJ......Jack Conrad's post (above) explained what 12 to 1 ratio is. Other words, recording spot is 1" dia. at 12" from the spot....6 to 1 is 6" from the spot.
The newer one are 12 to 1 ratio. The farther away the bigger the recording spot. You can move up and down with trigger held on to locate the hottest and coolness spot while reading.
