Design Tips In Converting a Great Skoolie

School bus conversions, also known as Skoolies, are slowly becoming a popular upcycling trend. As their name suggests, bus conversions are tiny homes renovated and rebuilt on a bus chassis. Unlike trailers and some RVs, bus conversions do not require a towing vehicle; instead, they combine the functionality of a tiny home with transportation. Bus conversions are all unique. Every conversion is different, which is why they are so popular.

Considering that buses and Skoolies are meant to be your tiny home on wheels, it is important to properly design and build your bus conversion to make the most of its relatively limited space. To give you a better idea, here are some tips for designing your bus, including the best space-saving features, such as high-quality bathroom cabinets, the best foldable table design, and more.

Benefits of having a Skoolie

Before we head on to our tips for designing the best bus conversion or Skoolie, let us dive deeper to understand exactly what the benefits and advantages of Skoolies, or bus conversions in general, are. As mentioned earlier, a bus conversion is a form of upcycling that repurposes old buses into tiny homes, offering a sustainable and notably affordable housing alternative. To give you a better idea about bus conversions, here are some of the benefits and advantages of building and owning one:

  • Relatively larger space compared to RV trailers and container homes
  • While there are also RVs or motorhomes built on a bus or a truck’s chassis, one of the most common types of RVs is those set on a car or van’s base. Obviously smaller than a Skoolie, this type of RV has far less space, which will affect the functionality of the entire mobile home. Taking this into consideration, it is safe to say that van RVs are not exactly the most comfortable option as compared to the larger Skoolie.

  • Home and transport molded into one
  • One of the benefits of living in a motorhome is that it is notably cheaper than living in a house or an apartment. Having your living space built along with your transportation means that you wouldn’t have to worry about rent and mortgage payments. Instead, you have the gift of mobility in your hands as you can take your home with you as you drive from one state to another.

  • Stronger and more durable RVs or trailers
