Article written by Tom Shafer

Tom is a lifelong bus fan and amateur motor vehicle historian from Los Gatos, California. He is the Vice President and Head Archivist for the Pacific Bus Museum (PBM), where he has been a member since 1994. He has contributed articles to Motor Bus Society’s magazine, Motor Coach Age, and also to The Paddle, PBM’s newsletter.

As Head Archivist, he oversees the Crown Coach factory records from 1934 to 1991 that were donated to PBM, and he has provided information to owners and historians.

He once owned a 1952 Crown school bus in original condition from his alma mater, Los Gatos High School, which he acquired in 2001 and donated to PBM in October 2003. The bus makes guest appearances in the Los Gatos Christmas Parade each year, transporting retired teachers from the high school. It is also one of the buses that as a child Tom looked at through the entry window.

Tom recently helped with a friend’s donation to PBM of a 1966 Crown Highway Post Office, converted to an RV by his father and used for over 40 years by two generations of their family.

In his spare time from working in his family business, Tom likes to do some “bus scouting” around California and beyond, and he has recently done research at the Motor Bus Society’s Archives, the Flxible Archives, and the Mack Museum Archives.

Please visit PBM’s website at www.pacbus.org, and also become a friend on our Facebook page.
The Pacific Bus Museum’s facility is located in Fremont, CA, and is open for visitors year-round on the first and third Saturdays from 10 AM - 2 PM. Special showings and car club tours may be made by advance arrangement at info@pacbus.org. Tom’s e-mail is twshafer@aol.com
