Perkins 4.108 Fuel Injection Pump

  I'm not unfamiliar with the Lucas brand of fun and excitement, having rebuilt a '66 MGB from the ground up. Always something to work on.

Anyone know what the CAV stands for? 

      I'm pretty sure it was something like "Charles A Vandervell" .  Vandervell was an early electric component manufacturer (and, may have been, like Lucas, even the supplier of things like acetylene headlights for vehicles prior to electrics) and branched out into mechanical items such as mechanical fuel injection systems and other non-electrical vehicle parts.  I believe that Lucas purchased CAV in the mid-1900s and continued to make the non-electrical items under the CAV brand for distribution with Lucas electrical parts.

Thanks - I was expecting it to be something more related to the operation of the pump, but that was interesting to learn.

Everything else aside, I gotta say that I'm pretty impressed with the indestructible quality of the Perkins engines. Not the quietest, not the prettiest, and certainly not the most leak-proof. But, they seem to just keep going. If the engine proves itself this year, I might decide to just replace the generator head and keep the engine should the old Kohler ever give us trouble (and I'm sure it will eventually.)

Only 945 hrs on the genset.

We had 2500 hours on our Koehler 12kw Perkins. Only problems were minor oil leaks, replaced mechanical fuel pump with electric, main electric ugs got burnt once. After that, checked tightness occasionally. Good unit, although heavy. Ours had a remote crossflow auto radiator and a squirrel cage blower to pull air through radiator and exhaust it through the floor.
