Perkins 4.108 Fuel Injection Pump
« on: April 03, 2019, 04:37:04 PM »
While the bus is at the shop for the Jake brakes, I had them send the fuel injection pump in to be resealed since it's leaking and not working properly. A year and a half ago when I did this on our 4106 the cost for the reseal was about $800 total.

This time around, the shop called me today to let me know that the rebuild shop wants $1100 to rebuild just the 'top side' of the pump, and if the 'bottom side' needs to be rebuilt it will be another $1100. Seems excessive to me, to say the least. My initial search online shows rebuilt pumps for about $1500, so this cost to fix my pump seems high.

So, does anyone have a good source for fuel injection pumps for older Perkins engines? Or, maybe someone can tell me that this suddenly high cost to rebuild a pump is normal. I'm assuming that I can find a rebuilt pump for much less than $2200, so I'm hoping to find a reputable source.

Thanks!
Richard

The obsolete CVA pumps are very costly to rebuild right but try a tractor supply the same pumps are found on the Ferguson tractors for around 500 to 1000 bucks exchange

Ouch!

Must be a marine oriented vendor?

As luvrbus notes, head straight for farm country.

Price difference between marine and farm takes my breath away, on identical parts.

Charge what the customer will pay?

Happy coaching!

Will a pump intended for a tractor work with the mechanical governor?

Kohler seems to have used some marine parts (like the water jacket exhaust manifold) and some land parts, like the set up for a radiator.

Same pump.the part I don't understand is he is saying if bottom needs rebuilding that is a rotary pump ? only thing under the cover is linkage ,O-rings and a gasket order by the number on the pump not the Perkins engine model

I'm going by the shop first thing tomorrow - I'll know more then. The guy at the service desk I'm working with was just as surprised as me with the price they were quoted.

That was my first thought, until I checked the invoice for the last time we had this done. Our 4106 had the same type of Perkins with the same problem - our cost was only about $800 last time for the rebuild total using the same rebuild shop. That's why we're thinking something is wrong with this quote.

Not very many of the injection pump shops will rebuild the CVA anylonger parts are hard to get and they never were that great like the old saying the English never made fridges because they never could make one leak oil or fuel

quick search on ebay, for CAV injection pump yielded 2 rebuilders  $495, and $595
go to the ag side  perkins diesel  as said use number on pump tag

If only leaking, but performing ok, I have resealed them myself.  not for the faint of heart though

It's both leaking and performing poorly. I've seen similar prices on the rebuilds, which is why I'm pushing them to do better. Unfortunately I don't have the pump in hand at the moment to look up the numbers, as it's already been sent to the rebuild shop.

Update:

For whatever reason, a replacement pump was not to be found. Nor was a reman one. Something about the particulars of how the thing was configured to work with the governor, etc. We were able to get the local rebuild shop to give us a price equivalent to what we could have ordered a reman pump for, had one been available. That seemed like a major accomplishment. Took a week for a part to arrive (I think from the UK) to enable the rebuild.

Bottom line, pump was rebuilt and installed. Happy to report that it made all the difference in the world. Not only does the Perkins start up easily, it seems to run smoother with no smoke now. Guess having rust inside the pump just isn't that good for performance after all. Fingers crossed our generator makes it through this season with no further problems.

I'm not unfamiliar with the Lucas brand of fun and excitement, having rebuilt a '66 MGB from the ground up. Always something to work on.

Anyone know what the CAV stands for?
