Audiovox Voyager Side Cameras
« on: November 12, 2008, 10:01:08 PM »
Does anyone have side cameras on their MCI?

I picked up a couple and I'm trying to figure out the best placement. The obvious location might seem to be maybe midline height at each side of the bus at the front but it seems like there is little room for that on an MCI or at least an 8.
Another thought might be just aft of the door and equally distant down the side on the other side. I've also thought of up high angled back and down but I'm not sure that I wouldn't maybe have a large blind spot forward of there right at the door for example ( I don't have a low window in my door).

Any ideas? What have others done that works for them?

By the way, I'm still sitting on my old 5" B&W monitor if anyone needs one cheap.

I don't know how wide of a viewing angle these cameras have, but you might first experiment with the high angled down approach and see if it creates a blind spot.  My first guess would be it won't be much of one if at all.  It seems it should only need a 90° angle of view to cover the full side looking down from the top front corner or even aft of the door.  Most cameras of that type have between 100° and 130° viewing angles if I'm not mistaken.

The only issue with high mounting that I can think of would be getting used to the angle.  The mind is likely to try to interpret it similar to the way it perceives the side mount mirrors - looking straight back.  While in fact the view would be at a 45° down angle.  I'm sure you would soon adapt to it, but it is something to think about and maybe experiment with before drilling any mounting holes.

Hi Dave,

Would you please share what model and where you bought them?

Thanks,

Paul

We installed our Voyager side cameras just aft of the door, on the right (passenger) side. We installed it just aft of the front J box, on the driver side. We installed ours as low as we could, but stayed in the letter board. They are pointed straight back. Basically we ran the wire through at the floor of the bus. Those cameras are a great extra security!!! We have very little blind spot (really no blind spot since the vehicle is so obvious when it is out of the cameras view).

God bless,

John

We installed our side camera above the door. It is mounted in a Carlon electrical box with a clear Lexan lens in front of the camera (our camera was water resistant not waterproof). Also a drop of rain water on the camera lens causes much more distortion than a few drops on the Lexan. The camera is up out of the way and shows that blind spot on the right side of the coach. When a car passes out of view in the camera, I can see the front of the car through the right windshield.  3266 was the number Greyhound assigned to this bus when they purchased it in November, 1973 according to a copy of the original build order that we have.
The other photo is of a waterproof camera I installed on a 102A3. The shroud/ mount for this camera is also a Carlon electrical box that was cut down.  Jack

Do you guys have automatic switching on your cameras I have the side mounts on my Eagle and have to change each camera from the monitor a hassle I think the radar system GreyHound uses is probably a better system .I have a Sony system and my cameras are not as big as the ones shown and have a large veiwing area      Good luck

Ours are tied to the turn signals. Whichever blinker turns on then the monitor turns to the camera on that side. If you want pics of our cameras and mounting, let me know. (Our cameras are pretty small. FWIW)

John, does your system have the split screen where the 3 cameras are avaiable at one time I know about the turn signals I can buy that switch from Sony but I would like to have the system that displays the 3 cameras on one screen   Good luck

Hey John,

Yes, pictures please! I just would like to know about who has what and how you like them. This is information that I want to learn so when I have nothing else to do I can go High Tech!

I have a lower window in my door, and it sure helps but every little bit you can see is great!

Thanks,

Paul

Mine is with the Audiovox AOM-7694 7" monitor that can split 2, 3 or 4 ways plus with outside trigger such as turn signal. It also allows you to name your camera sources.
I also have a Jensen stereo with a motorized flip up 7" screen that takes 4 inputs but no splitting. Both monitors I think support the motorized tilt function from the seat. I'm planning on running GPS and aux a/v into the Jensen monitor.

I have two 120 degree side cameras similar to the picture attached but mine are chrome, a rear color an a rear B&W and a B&W tilt cam.

Paul, I just pieced mine together here and there. Some was from RVstop, Rvshop or something like that. The B&W tilt cam was on Ebay for $59.00, I think he has more, item number 360099338779.
The side cams were not cheap but I got them new for like half price.

Now I just gotta figure out where I want everything! I'm pretty sure a tilt camera up front would be nice.

Jack, I like yours in the box mounted like that but is is difficult to get used to like Mike suggested?

Luverbus, we do have the split screen option. We don't use it, since the signals turn that to the side camera view. Usually it is on the rear view.

Paul, here are the pics. We essentially have the system that Paladin posted pics of.

HTH,

God bless,

John
