Can't find my flasher
«
on:

I just picked up my 1988 Eagle 15 and I ran into a few snags. I have one of my buddies stuck in southern MO with the bus right now getting the water pump changed and going through the lower half of the motor as there was water in the oil because of the pump problem. He should be back this thursday, and I can't wait to get started turning this in to the coach of my dreams.
The other snag is that we can't find the flasher. The blinkers are not working and I am 99% sure it is the flasher, but I can't find it anywhere. We looked all over the place by the panel and the rear by the tail lights, but no luck. Does anyone know where I should look?

Frontman,
Welcome to the board, I can not assist with the Eagle flasher, my MCI flasher is either in the electrical panel driverside outside, or forward of left side of driver inside coach.
I do have a question as to how a water pump problem allowed water into the oil. Not to get into your knickers, just wondering, so it does not happen to me. Experience is something I get just after I Needed it......
Take care,

Duh,
Let me take a guess that the water pump shaft seal on the water pump allowed water into the oil. Just woke up, can't sleep, can't think either, I had the mindset of my other diesels, (MB's).
Best of luck with your newly aquired coach.

On our Eagle 01 it is beside the driver in the electrical panel, not sure on the 15 though.
Do you have a set of manuals yet?

On my NJT model 20 the flasher is in the front bay, on the front bulkhead near the center.

Check the front bay. It won't look like the automotive flasher you are used to seeing, rather a rectangular box mounted on the wall. This is a heavy duty electronic flasher.

Look where Len suggests also depending on the serial number it could be there if you still don't find it post the serial number and I will look the location up for you.
If you do have that type don't worry about a replacement you can buy a electronic round type at Napa (EF 12) and wire it in cost about 20 bucks . The large flasher was a carry over from Eagle building the NJT buses I always move it to the electrical panel up front as most of the time converting the coach they get covered up
good luck

I think you may find a couple of them in the bay outside from the drivers seat. L & R. Mine has a history of not working because of a contact issue. Wiggle them a little or take them out and clean them up. They are easier to find and get working if you leave them on because when they start working when you move them you can hear them click. Mine are marked very legibly.
I also could drive with them on and after a period they would start working again. Parking inside seems to have cured my issues.
If you have a little water in the oil, its not a big issue. If you have coolant in the oil it is a real big issue. I would not drive it that way, it will likely seize the crank.

Thanks for all of the help!
I am new at this bus owning thing and I am sure I will have a ton of questions.
Just found that the pump was OK so I am looking at a head or a sleeve problem. All should be well when I finally get this baby home. I build homes for a living, so once I get to the inside of this bad boy I should be a little bit more in my comfort zone.
Again, thanks for all of the help.

Chad, don't be too quick to condemn a sleeve or a head.. the compressor is also cooled by the coolant and lubed by the crankcase oil.
It could also be an oil cooler leaking.

Thanks Dallas.
They checked the oil cooler out today and said it was all good.
Do you think that means we are looking at a head or sleeve problem?

Chad I don't know what shop you have the bus in but those guys need to pull the air box covers and check for leaking from the heads and sleeves that is a no brainier for 2 stroke guys.
Leaking from the top on the outside of the liner is a liner o-ring. water coming from the inside of the liner and piston through the ports is a head area problem.
Leaking into the air box at the bottom is a aftercooler leaking.
Sounds to me like the guys are going to get a bunch of your dollars
good luck

Not jumping on you, but just as a point of information... how did they check the oil cooler? IF they aren't real 2 stroke guys, (Like Luvrbus said), I think perhaps they are trying to pay for a new bass boat or maybe there's a nice little airplane the boss wants. getting the big, heavy, honkin' oil cooler off the side of the engine is a real PITA on an MCI where there's a lot of room to work. On an Eagle where there is no room to speak of, I can only imagine. Especially since there is one bolt behind the cooler that many people don't know about. Although, you could have one of the cylindrical oil coolers, which would be it's own problem.
Also like Luvrbus said... have then check out the airbox covers. There's a world of information in those little holes.
One more thing... have them do a pressure test on the coolant side of the air compressor... I've seen compressors lose a gasket from being run 24/7 for a couple of days. It doesn't happen often, but if there are any bad air leaks now or historically, it could be an option.
Good Luck,
Dallas
