Tire Problem

Went camping yesterday. About 10 miles from home.  (see pic below) :D
In the middle of the night we were awaken to this loud bang. I looked around but didn't find anything wrong and went back to bed. This morning I looked around and didn't find the problem right away but later found my right side inner dual flat and suspect it blew out during the night hence the loud bang. (see pic below)??? Well I guess my turn to price some 315/80R/22.5. I'm not sure what the best thing to do yet. Should I move the tags to the drives and the steers to the tags and buy new steers? I don't think just replacing one side of the duals is a good thing. Some thoughts would be good. This tire that went is the worst one on the bus. The steers now are new condition but are about four years old. The rest of the tires are around six years old.

Tires have more than the legal amount of tread left picture does not show tread depth well. I am not one to throw money away if not needed. The tire that went did have some cupping on the outside edge. That is why it was on the inside dual.

     Worst tires to outside, inertire caries the weight  when off road on right. D0 you run alot, fast, on hot days, etc.  Suggest best tires on right rear, new on front.  But keep rear's  side to side close to same height, measure height with out weight on them, fully inflated. so the fronts may not be good for rear if 1/2 inch taller than other side. Also duels need to be within 1/4 inch of each other.

Most tire shops where I live will not even take a tire in on trade that is over four years old, six years old, forget it.  Why put your family and equipment at risk?  Change 'em all and be done with it.  Legal or otherwise, it is not a good idea to run old tires.

If the steers are new condition, I'd leave them there, and replace the 4 drives. Then, in a few years when the steers are showing some wear and cupping, move them to the tag and replace
the steers.

Tires don't blowout on the tread area you can wear one out,but they blowout on the side walls Dot allows 1/32 tread on the rear and 2/32 on the steers and that is measured between 2 adjoining ribs not much tread huh .03125 and .0635,I never ran mine that close but a lot of truckers and operators do getting the most they can from a tire.

You can run a re grooved tire on the rear but not on the steers per DOT

Sometimes I get the impression that some may not have the ability to opporate safety if it were not for Mr DOT.

We (rv tags) are not under the jurisdiction of the DOT nor is their policies the safest thing either.

As for those tires in the photo I agree they are worn out. No need for insulting comments thou

Joe, so you don't think DOT has made a impact on safer trucking John just made the comment they were in specs and I posted the specs for others where you agree or not means nothing to me one way or the other

Here we go again.  So he is standing there, DOT bigger than Dallas, and he is writing me a $250 ticket and I say to him, "I am not commercial" and y'know what he said?

I didn't post pics to get into a debate about safety. My tags are at 8/32 my drives are at 7/32 and the tire that blew is at 6.5/32. The steers are at 21/32. I may agree that it is time to budget there replacement. But as far as safety I am with in limits. I have averaged the last two years about 4000 miles per year. I do have the real gage to check the tire depth. But you can use a penny if needed.  ;D

I totally agree. One can only go by looks and knowledge of use. I think your comments are spot on.

Are you really heavy enough to need 315/80R's?  Those are expensive tires, with a higher FET to boot.  Unless you need the load capacity, you might think about switching to 12R22.5.  Not only will it save you money, but you will get better fuel mileage and easier low-speed handling.
