For less than $100 you get the scanner itself, the cables including the 12-pin adapter, and the case.   Then you just buy the DDEC cartridge of whatever flavor your engine needs, and for a few hundred bucks you have the ability to read your engine's parameters and clear any codes.   When you buy a Pro-Link for GM cars it comes with the correct adapter for the diagnostic port, and because nobody these days wants a scanner for old GM cars they are always very cheap.   This is how I bought my scanner  -  I paid $225 for the whole shebang, including a brand-new DDEC II/III cartridge and manual and a printer.   Yeah!

That's the 12-pin plug's configuration for the under-dash connector.   It's not the operating system for the scanner itself!   My similar scanner that originally had GM cartridges works perfectly with a DDEC cartridge, and by buying a GM scanner set you avoid also needing a $50 12-pin adapter.
