Where's the dipstick! MCI-102A3
« on: March 19, 2019, 11:23:23 PM »

I replaced the engine on my 102A3 with another 6V92 out of an MCI9.

The engine has been great, but I have one problem.

The original engine had a long dipstick that came out from behind the air filter.  The replacement engine has a short dipstick that goes right into the transmission.  So I can't see any easy way to check it without taking it in to a shop.

I brought it to a mechanic for some brake work and asked them to solve the dipstick problem by putting on some sort of extension, but they had no clue of how they would find something like that.

Any thoughts?

My guess is that the dipstick adapter screws into a threaded hole in the blank, and that there are more then option in the 6V92 for placement of that adapter. Here's a page with lots of options for parts to make your dipstick system:

https://www.powerlinecomponents.com/catalog/detroit-diesel-v71/159/oil-dipstick

From that page, it looks like by using the engine serial number from your original engine you should be able to contact MCI and find out what dipstick parts were on your original engine.

Alternatively, look through some marine engine catalogues. From my searching online about this, it seems that for marine use it's common to add dipstick extensions to DD engine. Should be something from the marine world that will work in this application.

Are you talking about the engine dip stick, or the transmission dip stick?

There are plugs on the engine block where you can relocate a dip stick you may need to mark it when moved to a different location the MCI dip stick was in located at the front right corner on the 6 and 8v92's

On my coach, I usually find the dipstick behind the steering wheel  LOL

Oops - I misspoke - it's the *transmission* dipstick I'm looking for extending out.  Not the engine dipstick.

Fixed the title.
