Remove Knob on Morse Maxx Control Shifter

I have a 1986 MC9 with an Allison HT740 automatic transmission. The shifter is a Morse Maxx Control. The plastic cover plate is broken and part of it is missing.

I was able to track down the part number for a new cover plate (301162) by contacting Prime Line Industrial Controls technical support which seems to sell these now (although interestingly the response came from a guy at Dometic).

Has anyone removed the plastic knob from the control lever? The new cover plate will not fit over the knob. I may have to dissasembe the control unit to see if it’s possible to take out the lever, unless I decide to just cut the new cover plate in half and glue it back together.

I have a Morse remote manual shifter and the knob is threaded on. Normal rh threads.

The Morse automatic transmission shifter has a permanently affixed flat square flange at the top, and the plastic knob is intended to stretch over the top of it. You need to remove the knob before you can take off the plastic cover. The knob on my bus was evidently glued on with epoxy at some point and had lost all of its flexibility, so it had to be replaced after removal.

Fortunatly, I had purchased a good condition used Morse shifter control assembly from another type of vehicle which included the plastic cover, the knob and an indicator strip that wasn’t faded. I installed all of those parts and my shifter looks great.
