Valve cover gasket install
« on: November 26, 2020, 04:51:13 PM »
What would be the best adhesive/sealant for attaching a new gasket to the stamped steel valve cover on a DD 8V71?

Thanks.

I wasn't aware that there was any adhesive used at all. Here's the relevant page from the manual.

I don't have the steel rocker covers, but after I rebuilt my Jakes a few years ago I couldn't keep the silicone gaskets in place on my aluminum covers because they had stretched and wouldn't securely engage into the covers' grooves.   I used 3M 666 double-sided very thin adhesive tape to hold the gaskets onto the covers  -  I pressed the tape evenly into the grooves, then the gaskets stuck sufficiently to it to prevent them falling off while I put the covers on.   Easy!

I've used Permatex Hightack with success. Only coat one side of gasket and metal cover. Do not use any on side of gasket that contacts cylinder head. After applying, let it sit for a minute or two, then stick he two together. I wouldn't use it with silicone gaskets though.

Yep Hightack or no 5 Aviation Permatex FastTack works on the silicone gaskets without any ill effect those can be bear trying to reuse after they have been taken out lol they seem to grow
