parts bus
« on: July 21, 2023, 08:54:28 AM »
Never really thought of having one for my 23 years of bus ownership, but the talk from the crowd here about getting parts for our mostly dependable two strokes is beginning to concern me.  It would be nice to have a twin bus at home to grab parts when needed.  Mine is a 1985 model 10.  Not many out there it seems.   There is one in the BCM classifieds but the pictures the seller posted give me pause.  It doesn't really look roadworthy.  Therefore, it would probably cost what,? $5000 on a lowboy to get it home?  Kind of hard to justify that plus his asking price.

About 2 years ago a 1985 model came up on gov't auctions from a college in Jackson MS.  It went for $2000 minimum bid.  I just couldn't figure a way to get loose to go get it and let it pass.  That was one I wish I could do over.

Maybe another deal will come up someday.  I'm looking.

David part buses usually have major engine problems is why they are part buses.you can spend 10 grand on parts for a 6v92 now for the junk offshore  parts.BMW owns the rights to 2 strokes and a frignn OEM rear main seal cost $148.00 plus shipping,a OEM rebuilt blower has gone from $600.00 to $1700.00 plus a $1000.00 core charge.I would not buy a parts bus thinking a engine is ok.I was following a sale in Iowa a guy from the east lost a engine in Iowa a 8v71 in a nice MCI and just walked away and it was auction off cheap under 2 grand with the fees

Not trying to be a contrarian here, but as someone who deals with truck and equipment parts and repairs on a regular basis, none of those prices sound alarming to me.  Granted, those are large sums of money, but parts and labor costs are through the roof for everything.  I get that it's not as cheap as it used to be to keep things going, but it's not just these old 2 strokes.

Just my $.02
1964 MC5 that's a work in progress.

Parts for 2 strokes have always been cheaper than Cat or Cummins 1 part may be used on 4 or 5 different engines, prices started increasing when M/B bought DD but BMW prices are insane
