where can a guy get a pair of radiators ?
« on: December 05, 2023, 03:26:15 PM »
I am looking for paired radiators from an MCI 96-series coach or 102-series coach ... or, maybe, an MC9 coach - any paired, side-mounted radiators with core depth/thickness of 7+ inches. BTW, just upper & lower tanks would be fine ... the cores can be trashed or missing (I believe that I'm going to need to re-core no matter what).

I'm looking for a pair of radiators with widths of ~19 or 20 inches and core thickness of 7+ inches. The units that have been removed from my MC5c were measured at 20 inches wide & 24-3/4 tall. It would be great if I could find a couple of those thicker 28” X 19” units that needed re-coring (where that modification could be made) or I could commission fabrication of a couple of new units where the finished dimensions could be altered to include a height of ~24-3/4”.

I bought my last radiator for my Eagle at Stanton Radiator in Stanton California.  They did a great job but at about $4,000, it wasn't cheap.

In response to the recommendation to reveal my location ... I'm in far northern California (Crescent City - north of Eureka - near the Oregon border). My bus, on the other hand, is with a mechanic in central Oregon (right smack at the geographical middle).

On a related topic, I would like to request that someone look in their MCI 102-series and 96-series and MC9 parts manuals and share the part numbers for the paired side-facing radiators in those coaches.

Thanks in advance.

Craig I can't speak for your area were the bus is but in my area of eastern Nebraska there are several Radiator shops that work on truck, buses and heavy equipment radiators and they can either build or have built about any thing you need. There should be some one up in that area that can handle the job. It won't be cheap but it can be done.

Thank you, sir ... and I will look into having radiators built from scratch.

However, I still seek parts from paired radiators of greater depth [thickness] (MC9 or early MCI series 96 or early series 102) that could be utilized in fabricating new ones at a more modest price.

If your tanks are good and you find a good radiator shop, that will match the tube sizes, there are modern updates to fins and tubes that will provide more cooling, or heat transfer...

I use diesel radiator company out of Melrose park in chicago. I was sizing up a later 8 row set from an mc102 to cram into my mc5 with fab work but it’s winter now and there’s no longer a hurry with the low ambients and less worry of overheating

I consider that a good question ... but I don't have a good answer.

What I was trying to communicate was my belief that presenting a radiator shop with four serviceable tanks (two upper tanks & two lower tanks) and requesting re-coring with custom tube length would be more economical than presenting them with a drawing and requesting a complete design service utilizing sheet metal.

It is a lot cheaper to take your time traveling with the original HP setting on the 8v71 in a MCI you bump one with larger injectors for more HP they run hot.You use thicker radiators, the problem with side mounted radiators they don't have enough surface area for cooling you are drawing the air trough the same surface area just more rows of tubes. I come across the 9's with a factory installed 8v92 TA set @ 360 hp with the thicker radiators and larger blower fans and they run hot if you keep your foot in the throttle, cooling on a MCI is a up hill battle one usually loses when you change for more HP

What would the result be if one repurposed the heater core (perhaps rebuilt using more modern components, like dimpled tubes, and diverting airflow from/to the outside world) to more efficiently cool the engine and not warm the coach's interior?

Here's what I did with my passenger heater core, redirecting it to a third radiator out of the rear of the engine, make a Uturn to where the AC compressor uses to be, then mounting a third radiator with its own 24volt fans with thermostat switches. Cut some holes in the door to allow air flow, and I had less heat problems climbing  Raton Pass...
