Need info on Aircard internet service

Hi Guy's,

Is there a device that will allow my Verizon usb Aircard to handle multiple computers at once?

I think there was a thread about this but, I have not found it yet.

Nick,

We use wireless networking on a peer to peer network (home networking) using wireless ethernet cards. We connect using our AT&T/Cingular connection and just set up a shared connection with Internet Connection Wizard.

I'm sure any of a number of people could walk you through the set up anytime you want.

I would be happy to help you sometime tomorrow night, if you want to get on the phone.

Yup, if I had the spare money (what is that these days :( ) I would grab one of those routers in a heartbeat.  But like Dallas, I use peer-to-peer networking on my computers when I need simultaneous access on more than one or to pass files from one computer to another.

The Kyocera KR2 is one of the bigger named in the EVDO router business and supports the Verizon USB devices, at least the Novatel ones.

You probably don't care, but Verizon does specifically prohibit sharing their connections, plus they have a cap of 5GG per month they sometimes enforce.  I don't know if the 5GB cap is in writing or not.  (Disclaimer:  I have not looked into this in six months and maybe things have changed with Verizon.)

Sprint allows connection sharing and sells a router to do so.

The 5GB cap is still in Verizon's terms of service, when you hit that they cut your connection speed to roughly dial up speed (they got sued for cutting it off completely, so now they just render it pathetically slow).  That and coverage were why I chose Millenicom which uses the Sprint network sans the contract.  (Since then, I've heard that Millenicom has the added benefit of using both Sprint and Verizon towers for improved coverage.)

Hi all..

I'm trying to eliminate my second service that is terriable...,the Comcast Cable that locks up all the time... and 95.00 per month.

My thoughts are to use the wireless usb from verizon in the office during the day, and bring it home at night.

The office comps are HP slimline 3120 duel core with [WLAN] wireless integrated inside them. No Bluetooth on theese.

I don't know if these comps have the ability to let me plug my air card into one and go wireless to the other or not without

the router??

I use a Verizon air card all the time on my laptop at home and on the road. It's an old HP and I love it, the card! Is it fast? Probably not as fast as some cable/s, but fast enough I don't get bored! It works everywhere I have taken it except way way out in the boonies! That's understandable! As for using it with another pc at the same time? Don't know! Never tried! Wouldn't know how to even if I could!
Very happy with the air card in general!

You don't need to worry about bluetooth.
The WLAN is short for "Wireless Local Area Network" so you have part of the battle done right there. If you are using Vista as an OS, I'm not sure that I'm qualified to set your P2P WLAN up over the phone. I've never done one. But it can't be that difficult, after all, Bill Gates wouldn't allow anything out that wasn't easy to use and secure, would he?

With your Comcast service, have you tried disconnecting the router from every computer and shutting the router down completely? A cold boot is usually a lot better than a warm boot if you are haing lock up problems. If that isn't it, make them give you a newer better router.

I'm not certain about the Verizon 5Gb. limit, that's a lot of transfer. I would look at the logs from your current provider and see how much you actually use.

If it's less than 5Gb./mo. go for it... $95 is steep for a direct connection to the internet. I wouldn't be surprised to find that in your area you could get a partial T-1 line for that price. Geez, In Johnson City, Tn. 6 years ago we could pull in a full T-1 for under $250/month with a guarantee of 95% uptime.

Hi Dallas,

OS is Vista. Comcast has replaced the router already and before and after, the same thing... We have to restart the router and modem daily.

My laptop is always on at home with the connection always on too. I don't seem to get cut off at all with Verizon ??

Comcast is charging me a commercial rate at the shop and for what?? bad internet service [BIS] I call it!

Verizon is offering phone Internet service for 29.99 mo but, they may get me for commercial fees also??

Once upon a time when I had Comcast at my home, I was having that kind of problem.  I spent several unproductive sessions with their help people and they sent a guy out.  No improvement.  More help sessions and they sent another guy out.  He said, let's disconnect everything, including the Comcast cable from the back of the modem and let it set for 5 minutes.  Then he connected the cable to modem and plugged in the modem's power and waited one minute, allowing all lights to stabilize.  Then connected the router to the modem and powered it up, giving it a full minute to negotiate its connection to the modem.  Then plugged in the network cables to the modem (it was a wired network) and booted the computers (with a wireless network you would simply turn the computers back on).  Problem was solved - no more loss of Internet.

(Make sure you turn off the computers, not just put them in hibernate or standby mode.)

This doesn't help with the $95 per month, but it does maintain your 5-7Mbps connection you are accustomed to.

Another concern they addressed before finding this solution had been how many splitters and devices were connected in the home.  Each splitter or added device in the home lowers the signal strength to all connections.  Also, the health of each coupler attached to the wire.  They stated that any frayed or otherwise damaged connectors can weaken signal strength or introduce noise into the line.
